Overcast, a popular podcasting app from Marco Arment, has tried several different monetization strategies including paid up front, IAP, and patronage. When Marco switched to subscriptions, I immediately subscribed to remove them the ads. Why? I'd like to say it was to support an independent developer, but that was only half of it. The app looked terrible with an ugly ad across the top. Such is the tradeoff for mobile developers. It will be interesting to see how the new subscription models work for apps like Overcast.
