Last Friday, The Developers Union was born. Led by four iOS/macOS developers, the goal is to "advocate for sustainability" in the App Store. Right now, the main goal is to get free trials implemented on the App Store. Pushing for a better cut of the revenue will soon follow
If a union like this can gather enough support, and it's growing quickly, it can have an affect on Apple policies. One thing we know is that Apple typically reacts to publicity, as long as there is enough of it around a particular issue.
Not too many developers are going to build apps as a business right now. Sure, there are opportunities, but much of the deck is stacked against us. I haven't created a new app for myself in two years. The reason? I don't have any financial incentive. I'm not confident that any of the ideas I've had are worth the hard work it would take to bring to market. I joined The Developers Union and I hope you consider joining too!
